The Philosophy of Toronto High School of Cinema and Theatre Arts
"You may, as the free and extraordinary shaper of yourself, fashion yourself in the form you prefer… The supreme and marvelous felicity of being human is that you can be what you will yourself to be."
(De Hominis Dignitate) Pico della Mirandola (1463-1494)
The humanist Pico della Mirandola wrote De Hominis Dignitate in 1486, after an extensive study and profound reflection on Greek, Latin, Arabic and Hebrew writings and philosophy. He explored the presence in human beings of the duty to pursue fulfillment through the discovery of the arts. Once free from preconceived ideas, and free to acquire knowledge, humanity could discover that all cultures were different, yet that they all partook of a shared essence. From this discovery, and the consequent experimentation, comes the possibility of the fulfillment of human and artistic potential, harmony and freedom of expression.
The philosophy of our school gives priority to freedom of expression, imagination and experimentation by introducing the students to the fundamental elements of cinema and theatre as performance art forms, using specific visual and dramatic languages. We emphasize both cultural knowledge and technical knowledge.
The Mission of Toronto High School of Cinema and Theatre Arts
Our school is committed to equipping its students with a strong command of the language and the art of film and drama in their various aspects and specialized options, in conjunction with the harmonious development of their human potential and artistic abilities, relying on the most up-to-date technical equipment, a holistic, culturally-minded approach, and a carefully structured curriculum.
