The Motto of Toronto High School of Cinema and Theatre Arts

Imagine. Experiment. Express.

Dramatic and filmic storytelling is a language, and as such is an instrument of expression. Toronto High School of Cinema and Theatre Arts provides its students with cultural and technical knowledge and tools, but does not tell them what to express, which they have to discover for themselves. Students are encouraged to go through a process of experimentation, reflection and imagination conducive to the formation of ideas and themes, to the free expression of an artistic vision, and to the development of a unique personality.

Our core values

Storytelling: "I’m just a storyteller…"

(Norman Jewison, Canadian film director)

Language: "Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own."

(Goethe 1749 -1832)

Reflection: "Study without reflection is a waste."

(Confucius, 551-479 BC)

Cultural knowledge: "Knowledge is of no value unless you put it into expression."

(Anton Chekhov, 1860-1904)

Imagination

"Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will."

(George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950)
